Every week we’ll highlight the best question sent to our resident insurance expert, Anne Marie Thomas. This week’s question comes from a Shukri who is wondering if there are distance restrictions for people who hold a G1 driver’s licence.
Shukri asks:
“Can a G1 drive long distances?”
There are a variety of rules that a G1 licensed driver must follow, but a restriction purely on distance driven doesn’t appear to be one of them, explains Anne Marie.
“Although there is no specific limit on how far, or how long, a G1 licensed driver can drive there are restrictions on when and where they can drive. G1 drivers cannot drive on any 400-series highway (401, 410, 404, 400, 407, etc.), for example, as well as the QEW, DVP and Gardiner Expressway. There are others as well, including the E.C. Row Expressway in Windsor and the Conestoga Parkway in Kitchener-Waterloo. G1 licensed drivers also cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
“There may be other routes where G1 drivers are restricted from travelling on too so it’s best that you check with MTO to be sure of the legalities for your route and plans.”
A G1 licence is the first licence for new drivers and common sense would suggest that given their inexperience, a G1 driver shouldn’t overdo it. While practice makes perfect, driver fatigue is a real hazard, especially for someone with limited exposure behind the wheel.
