With insurance fraud all over the news lately, it's important to be aware of potential scams that could affect you.
Here are some tips to avoid being a victim of fraud when purchasing a car or car insurance:
- If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- Do not send money or give cash upfront to anyone - especially those claiming that you'll receive your policy or car keys in the mail.
- Take the opportunity to sleep on it. If you're being pressured into something or it's a "one-day deal", it's probably a scam.
- Do your homework. When purchasing a car, make sure you obtain a vehicle history report. And when selecting an insurance company, check with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) to validate the insurer.
